What's Going On

Posted by Ben at 2012-10-31 07:24:02 UTC

Greetings everyone. Many of you have been having trouble with the Recaptcha of late. There’s a reason for that: Recently, we were attacked by spammers. They posted links to their site (which I believe was filled with trojans and other nasty things) in the comments section of our comic every thirty minutes or so. Sadly, the Recaptcha was totally useless agains them, and none of my webmasters had any solutions, so I had to make the executive decision to disable commenting. The form is still up, you can totally fill it out, but the Recaptcha is set to auto-fail everything. I’m sorry I had to do that, but currently there’s no other solution we can find. Hopefully the situation won’t last very long, but I honestly can’t predict what’s going to happen. In the meantime, please hit up our Facebook page or Deviant Art page if you want to chat with other fans.

In the meantime, there’s been some confusion with the most recent comic. That’s…understandable, and I’ll do my best to explain what was going on in my head whilst I was writing these scripts.

The first thing to know is that earlier in the comic I broke the 4th wall, a lot. I did this mostly because it was funny at the time, and partly because we were planning on writing a “gag a day” comic that had some serial elements. Obviously, as time went on, we switch our writing style to be mostly serial with a gag on each page. Not a big issue, but as I continued to write the “4th wall breakage” in previous comics started to bother me a bit. I didn’t want to make them non-canon, but at the same time they didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the comic.

I resolved the issue (in my head) by basically making DBC a two-tiered comic. “Like an onion,” as user Stonefoot put it. Tria and Tagalong (as opposed to Ben and Elaine, the real life people) were writing and creating a comic (or TV show, or what have you) in which Walter, Tiren, and company were actors performing the roles written for them. In these most recent comics, while dimension hopping, the crew appeared in the “real world” only to be shoved off before anything really silly could happen. The actors playing them appeared just a little too late to meet the real version of the characters they portray.

I’m going to be honest, reading these most recent comics, I’m a bit unhappy with them, and I’m not sure I want to make them canon. They’re probably going to stay up, I’m not in the habit of changing around things too much once they’ve hit the website, but it’s more of question on where they will go in volume three or four (I haven’t quite parsed out how long those volumes will be). So, to that end I’m going to create a “vote by email” poll. Do we make these two 4th wall breakage comics canon? Or extra comics that never happened? Let us know. Also email me if you have any other questions about what is going on in these comics.

Con Report Delayed For Awesome

Posted by Ben at 2012-09-08 07:21:22 UTC

I’m sorry, I know I told a lot of you that I would have a Kumoricon report soon (hint: it was awesome) but we have bigger news. The comic Tria and I have been working on (along with DBC) is finally here. Licensed Heroes is a look at unemployment and daily life for an out of work or underemployed hero. It takes place in an anachronistic fantasy universe, and has been pretty much eating up all our time for the past month (aside from Dubious Company).

If you like DBC (which I’m sure you do if you’re reading this) you’ll like Licensed Heroes, check it out!
